Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10-inch)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch

And here we have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that looks more like a brother from another mother. It's a Galaxy Tab, all right. But the speakers have been brought out front -- basically it's the same body as what we saw released in Germany to stave off design patent issues. That makes it different from the newly announced Galaxy Note 10.1, which also throws in the S Pen feature. Elsewhere on the hardware front, we've got a 10.1-inch plane-line switching display at 1280x800 resolution, a 1 GHz dual-core processor, and it's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with the TouchWiz UI improvements on top.

Things are as speedy as you'd expect, and Samsung's done well with the UI tweaks to make use of all that extra space.

We've got a complete hands-on with still and moving pictures after he break.

Understanding the Risks and Frequency of Unnecessary Surgery in the US

Every year, millions of Americans undergo surgery in order to fix health problems that are affecting their lives; however, many of these surgeries may not be necessary and may be used simply to profit a healthcare facility and its workers. While many surgeries are performed under emergency circumstances every year, many more are willingly performed in order to deal with diagnosed health issues found in a patient. It is this type of decision that leads to many patients undertaking unnecessary operations that not only costs a great amount of money, but can also leave a patient vulnerable to new health problems.

'Hunger Games' And 'Twilight' Oddly Absent From Oscars

'Harry Potter,' meanwhile, was shut out of its two nominations — but couldn't the YA franchises' stars get involved?
By Kara Warner

There's still a lot to discuss and digest from the 2012 Oscars, from the glitz and glamour, to the surprises, snubs and glaring omissions.

Speaking to the snubs and omissions category, MTV News couldn't help but notice that, for an awards show designed to appeal to all movie fans, three of the most buzz-worthy film franchises of the last decade were mostly left out of the festivities: "Harry Potter," "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games."

This is not a story about the lack of nominations for the films; we've already complained about the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" shutout and "The Hunger Games" hasn't even been released yet. But why not involve a few of these noteworthy films' castmembers in the telecast? We consulted a few experts on the subject.

"I think this year is more glaring than most, for sure," said Entertainment Weekly senior writer Sara Vilkomerson. "Personally, I'm surprised there was not a lot of 'Potter' stuff; that was a very lucrative franchise for a lot of people and really critically acclaimed, the last movie. I feel like there was a definite lack of youth. I know in my house, when the 'Hunger Games' ad came on, it felt a little more exciting than certain parts of the telecast."

"The Academy obviously went out of their way to acknowledge the lack of youth appeal — but a handful of jokes in Billy Crystal's video montage and a little token Bieber isn't enough to fix it," added Brooke Tarnoff, senior editor for NextMovie.com. "It's a hard line to walk, enticing younger viewers but still voting with integrity. Maybe the answer is expanding Academy membership to more young actors who will be able to choose 'young people movies' with a clear conscience."

"I'm a house divided on the Oscars and the youth audience," said Shylah Addante, who runs "Hunger Games" fan site Down With the Capitol. "On one hand, as a card-carrying fangirl, I absolutely understand the outrage about last night's 'Potter' snub. For a franchise that has touched the hearts and minds, not to mention the wallets, of so many people around the world for a decade, the absence of Oscar gold left me feeling like the Academy was full of Dementors. On the other hand, the fiercely proud side of me wants a film to win an Oscar because it deserves it — not because it's a tentpole franchise or because it made one bajillion dollars worldwide. If 'Hugo' was any lesson to young Oscar viewers, it is that, in the right hands, a children's/young adult book can become a film worthy of major awards."

"It's a very, very hard line to teeter on. I have full sympathy for the people who are trying to organize it," Vilkomerson said. "It just shows how challenging it is to put on a really good Oscar telecast that makes everyone happy, that hits everything that everybody wants. It's a hard, hard show to put on. Maybe next year, 'The Hunger Games' will be nominated and that will be the easiest way to interlace these two worlds."

Addante agreed with next year's potential for "The Hunger Games." " 'Potter' and 'Twilight' may not have wooed the Academy, but 'Hunger Games,' with its decorated cast and crew, contemporary social and political messages and dramatic plot, may just have what it takes to finally give some critical legitimacy to young adult series and their fans."

Are You Responsible For How You Feel Now?

Often times, persons blame others for their own feelings. We do shift the responsibility of how we are feeling to others. We all say things like "She made me mad." "She hurt me." "He freaked me out." "He makes me unhappy." "He makes me feel bad about myself." These kinds of comment imply that we have no choice in how we feel and that others have control over us. In the real sense, we have control - they don't.

Justin Bieber Crashes Oscars Opening Skit

'I'm here to get you the 18-24 demographic,' Biebs jokes to Billy Crystal during the Academy Awards opener.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber appears in a "Midnight in Paris" parody at the 2012 Oscars
Photo: ABC

Billy Crystal knows how to get the kids to watch the Academy Awards. When he wasn't appearing in parody scenes from Oscar-nominated films at the opening of Sunday's (February 26) show, he was taking a second to lock in the tween viewership, with a good dose of Holocaust-related humor for added measure.

For his parody of the Woody Allen flick "Midnight in Paris," a tux-wearing Justin Bieber rolled up to the Academy Awards host, who was sitting on a stoop. "Come here, come here," he shouted to Crystal. "What's up? I'm here to get you the 18-24 demographic. So how long do you want me to sit here for?"

"A couple seconds, I think, will do it," Crystal said. The two then exchanged some awkward, lingering glances waiting out the appropriate amount of time before they could move on to the next part of their gag, which, of course, focused on Hitler and the Holocaust.

"So what are you going to do now?" Crystal inquired. Bieber replied, "We're gonna go hang out with Hemingway and Fitzgerald." That "we're" he was referring to was Bieber and Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr.

Crystal, done up as Davis Jr., added, "And then we're gonna go kill Hitler. Billy, is Biebs the young Sinatra, or am I nuts?"

"Oh Sammy, stop it!" Bieber laughed, before pulling off.

The opening sketch also included homages to "The Artist," "The Help," "Moneyball" and "The Descendants," to name a few, with appearances by nominees including George Clooney and Jonah Hill. After the sketch closed out, Crystal hit the stage for a musical number.

'American Idol' Top 24: How To Tell Hallie Day From Heejun Han

We break down this year's remaining 'Idol' hopefuls, from Aaron Marcellus to Skylar Laine, and everyone in between.
By James Montgomery

Members of the "American Idol" Top 24
Photo: FOX

On Thursday, after approximately 4,256 hours of auditions, callbacks, comparisons, falsettos and fainting spells (not to mention the occasional bit of nudity and some stuff on a battleship), "American Idol" finally whittled the masses of dreamers down to the Top 24.

It was a ride, to say the very least, but at long last, we know the names and faces of the folks who will battle it out to become the heir to Scotty McCreery's crown. Of course, keeping track of all the hopefuls can get rather difficult (especially since so many of them are country singers), which is why we've once again taken it upon ourselves to break down each of them in handy-dandy bios. Because how else are you supposed to tell your Hallie Days from your Heejun Hans?

So here's our guide to the Top 24 — we're not even going to get into the whole "Surprise Save" that'll be unveiled next week ... haven't we been through enough already? — alphabetized and cross-referenced for your perusing pleasure.

Aaron Marcellus: Throwback soul singer too frequently overshadowed by groupmates (and fellow Top 24ers) Creighton Fraker and Jen Hirsch. Seems like he could have a moment at some point during the live shows. Sort of looks like Godfrey.

Adam Brock: Secretomotoristic father/crooner/possessor of magical handkerchief who barely made it to the Top 24. Kind of a combination of Casey Abrams and Ruben Studdard, only with better facial hair.

Baylie Brown: Pop-country pinup who returns to the competition after making a run as a teen. Could charitably be described as "Carrie Underwood Lite." Probably gets lots of dirty looks from Skylar Laine.

Brielle Von Hugel: Empirically named progeny of cloying stage mom, who, not surprisingly, carries herself as a diva-in-training. Wearer of impressively knitted half-blouses. Capable of putting some stank on it.

Chase Likens: Unassuming country dude who sort of recalls Neon Bible-era Win Butler. Vest enthusiast. Uh, yeah.

Chelsea Sorrell: Small-town gal whose childhood dreams included being both "a mom and a country singer." As far as we can tell, she's halfway there. Had some rough patches, still made the Top 24. Dropper of many "Y'alls."

Colton Dixon: Sorta-emo guy who looks like a Tim Burton illustration. Outlasted his sister during Hollywood Week, none too happy about that fact. Gives off a slightly Christian vibe, which, coupled with the fact that he's from Tennessee, probably means he knows Hayley Williams.

Creighton Fraker: Lithe-voiced/creatively haired cabaret singer who flaunted his lack of employment for maximum impact. Seen wearing fuzzy rabbit ears during "Idol" vignettes. Slightly odd, yet may be one of the best male singers in the competition.

Deandre Brackensick: Lion-maned teen with equally epic moniker, he's been down this path before. Finally made the Top 24, yet needs to find his zone to advance in the competition.

Eben Franckewitz: Polite 15-year-old Bieber-ite who bested David Leathers Jr. to nab the final guy's spot (outrage!) Overall lack of confidence nearly as glaring as his bad posture. Proud recipient of the coveted "You're cute!" endorsement from Jennifer Lopez.

Elise Testone: Likeable lifer who absolutely kills it every time she takes the stage. Raspy/sultry notes for days. Can put some stank on it. Still, will probably will get voted off early. If you squint, she kind of resembles Ke$ha.

Erika Van Pelt: Effervescent wedding singer with brassy voice. Kind of a surprise addition to the Top 24. Has a massive back tattoo, ala Crystal Bowersox, yet will probably not make it as far as the 'Sox.

Haley Johnsen: Vaguely indie smokeshow from the Pacific Northwest. Voice like a steam kettle, yet also capable of some stank when the situation demands it. Like Megan Joy, minus the tattoo sleeve.

Hallie Day: Former girl-group member/cautionary tale who appropriately owned Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." Dark horse. Lips single-handedly keeping Blistex in business. Choice of husband a source of inspiration for slightly chunky dudes everywhere.

Heejun Han: Buttery-voiced, slightly catty people's champ. Seems to understand the inherent ridiculousness of this entire contest. Frequent hugger. Deflects any perceived criticisms (i.e. "He's kind of a jerk") by working with the mentally challenged. Cunning.

Hollie Cavanagh: Last girl in. Scouser/Southern accent makes her sound like Paul McCartney running a cattle auction. Good voice. Appears to be very nice, also appears to be channeling every single girl who sat behind you in Social Studies, neither of which bode well for her chances of winning.

Jen Hirsch: Big (big!)-voiced belter who may very well be the one to beat. Miles of stank. Likeable. Kind of recalls a supercharged Haley Reinhart, yet could definitely out-Reinhart Reinhart herself. We hope she wins.

Jeremy Rosado: Only member of the highly touted Leathers/Sprague/Carruba contingent to make the Top 24 (until Leathers gets in as the "Surprise Save" next week). R&B-esque upper register, yet may not possess the, uh, fortitude to impress voters.

Jessica Sanchez: Supremely driven 16-year-old who can sing the phonebook. Age belies her supreme diva-tude. Could see her winning the whole thing, could also see her flaming out when producers fail to secure correct shade of white linens for her dressing room. Maximum stank.

Joshua Ledet: Twitchy balladeer/preternaturally old soul with talent to spare, yet appears to lack the self confidence required to make a deep run. Makes goofy faces whilst singing, which only makes him more likeable.

Phillip Phillips: Oddball dreamboat/pawnshop employee whose bizarre name seems to suggest he had really mean parents. Probably wants to read you his poetry. Definitely owns hemp garments. Could conceivably win this whole thing if he stops with the whole "Dave Matthews foot shuffle" thing.

Reed Grimm: All-grown-up stage kid who is eternally on. Name recalls Marvel Comics supervillan. Occasionally breaks into ill-advised bouts of scatting. Made sure everyone knew he could play the drums. Sort of looks like Ethan from "Lost." Is annoying.

Shannon Magrane: Talented offspring of former MLB pitcher with career .460 winning percentage. Unwilling target of Steven Tyler's creepy (and borderline illegal) advances. Has undoubtedly met Harold Reynolds, which makes us jealous.

Skylar Laine: Sparkplug Southern gal who keeps getting compared to Bonnie Raitt. Can effectively handle an ATV, yet was also hospitalized during Hollywood Week. Will probably be outshined by both Brown and Sorrell, despite being more talented than either of them. Reminder that sometimes life isn't fair.

Oscars Acceptance Speeches: The Best And The Worst

MTV News looks back on the most moving speeches and those that left us cringing.
By John Mitchell

Jennifer Hudson at the 2007 Oscars
Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images

Delivering a good Oscar acceptance speech is not easy. If you over prepare, you seem arrogant, like you knew you were going to win all along, and if you aren't ready for your name to be called, you're almost certain to forget to thank your significant other or your film's director. Some Oscar winners suffer from a serious case of the sniffles and leave audiences unsure what they even said, while others go off on tangents that have nothing to do with movies at all.

In the end, though, it mostly just comes down to having that special something, that je ne sais quoi. And let's face it, you've either got it or you don't. Below are five stars we think nailed it when they were called onstage and five who, well, didn't exactly charm viewers' pants off on movies' biggest night.

Best
Cuba Gooding Jr., Best Supporting Actor, "Jerry Maguire" (1998)
Gooding's acceptance speech is basically an exercise in pure joy. The actor leapt to the stage and earnestly thanked just about everyone he's ever met, starting with his mother and God, and issued "I love you's" to "Maguire" co-star Tom Cruise, director Cameron Crowe and pretty much everyone else who worked on the film. His genuine enthusiasm captured the crowd and earned him a standing ovation.

Halle Berry, Best Actress, "Monsters Ball" (2002)
History was made when Berry won the Best Actress statue — she was the first African American woman to claim the lead actress prize — and she honored the moment with an emotional speech that she dedicated to "every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance after tonight because this door has been opened." She thanked the actors and actresses of color who came before her and declared the moment "so much bigger" than herself. Her speech was an exercise in humility and surprise — two things most Oscar acceptance speeches could benefit from.

Jennifer Hudson, Best Supporting Actress, "Dreamgirls" (2007)
Hudson's took home the Oscar for her very first film performance and delivered a simple acceptance speech that was probably most notable for how humble and truly surprised she seemed to hear her name called. Though she'd been a favorite throughout awards season that year, she seemed shocked when George Clooney announced that she'd won and stuttered and stumbled her way through her speech, but was sure to thank all those she needed to, from "Dreamgirls" director Bill Condon and her co-stars to her family, friends and Jennifer Holliday, who originated the role of Effie White on Broadway.

Tom Hanks, Best Actor, "Philadelphia" (1994)
Hank's Oscar acceptance speech may well be the only one to have inspired a movie itself. His lengthy speech was marked by some traits we don't always love — it certainly felt rehearsed — but the actor's gratitude seemed genuine when he thanked his high school drama teacher, Rawley Farnsworth, as well as a former classmate, who he called "two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men." There was only one problem: Farnsworth was still in the closet about his sexuality. The slip of the lip inspired the 1997 film "In & Out," in which Kevin Kline plays a high school drama teacher outed when his former student (played by Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar. In a nice turn of events, the always lovely Joan Cusack earned an Oscar nomination herself playing Kline's jilted fiancée in "In & Out."

Julia Roberts, Best Actress, "Erin Brockovich" (2001)
Then easily the world's biggest female movie star, a clearly nervous and deeply happy Roberts delivered a gracious — and long — speech that she wisely prefaced by asking the orchestra director, whom she referred to as "Stick Man," to sit on his baton. She burst out in fits of laughter throughout and charmed the audience with asides about her director Steven Soderbergh, then-boyfriend Benjamin Bratt and her co-stars and delivered what was maybe the most gracious "thank you" ever to the other women up for Best Actress that year: Joan Allen, Juliette Binoche, Ellen Burstyn and Laura Linney.

Worst
Marlon Brando, Best Actor, "The Godfather Part" (1973)
There are plenty of places for actors to make political statements, but the Oscars really isn't one of them. The film legend did not attend the 1973 Academy Awards and instead famously sent American Indian rights activist "Sacheen Littlefeather," nee Marie Cruz, in his place with a 15-page statement to read onstage if he won the prize — which he did. An Academy Awards producer intercepted her backstage and threatened to have her physically removed if she spoke for longer than 60 seconds, so when Littlefeather stepped onstage to accept Brando's prize, she waved the Oscar away and gave an off-the-cuff speech about the Wounded Knee Incident.

The incident inspired the Academy to alter its rules to not permit proxies to accept Oscar trophies.

Adrien Brody, Best Actor, "The Pianist" (2003)
Some loved Brody's enthusiastic speech while others took great issue with his onstage behavior. When the actor reached the stage to accept his prize, the first thing he did was sweep Halle Berry up into his arms and plant a passionate kiss on the clearly shocked actress's lips. While it seemed mostly harmless and Berry was a good sport about the ordeal, many thought it inappropriate as he clearly did not have her consent before kissing her.

James Cameron, Best Director, "Titanic" (1998)
The only word to sum up Cameron's Best Director speech is "arrogant." Throughout his otherwise inoffensive speech, the director seemed imbued with the confidence of a man who knew the prize was his before his name was even called, which is fine and dandy and probably not all that overreaching, as his film was widely acclaimed and well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film ever. However, his decision to conclude with one of the film's most famous lines — "I'm king of the world"— left a sour taste in the mouths of viewers.

Angelina Jolie, Best Supporting Actress, "Girl, Interrupted" (2000)
Everything about Angelina Jolie's Oscar evening the night of her win was, well, kind of weird. Not only was the drop-dead-gorgeous actress dressed like Morticia Adams, she brought her brother, James Haven Voight, as her date and the pair acted a little too close for comfort on the red carpet. They kissed and clung to each other and it was totally gross ... then she won the Best Supporting Actress prize and thanked her bro, saying, "I'm just so in love with my brother right now." The whole thing was awkward and the incident haunted the actress for years, until her tabloid drama with current partner Brad Pitt and her humanitarian work on behalf of refugees finally overshadowed the strange behavior.

Michael Moore, Best Documentary Feature, "Bowling For Columbine" (2003)
Like Brando, Moore used the Oscars as a political forum and it was just as inappropriate when he did it. Moore scored the documentary prize for "Columbine," a powerful film about gun violence in America, but rather than thank those who helped him make the important doc, he used the stage to express his disdain for President George W. Bush and his disagreement with the decision to invade Iraq. "We are against this war, Mr. Bush," Moore chastised. "Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you." No, shame on Michael Moore for using the Oscars as a soap box when they are supposed to be a celebration of film.

Oscar Lovebirds: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez & More

From Justin and Selena to Justin and Jessica, MTV News takes a look at the hottest couples from the 2011 Academy Awards.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Craig Barritt/ Getty Images

The Academy Awards happen to be one of the most glamorous nights of the year, filled with over-the-top acceptance speeches and crazy-expensive couture. It can also serve as the glitziest date night for some of the most famous people in the world. With this year's Oscars only days away, we decided to take a look back at last year's show and remember some of the most dazzling couples to hit the Oscar scene.

A very pregnant Natalie Portman took the stage on Oscars night last year to accept her prize for Best Actress for her role in "Black Swan." In between "thank you's" for the Academy, her family and her fellow nominees, she also thanked her main man, and the father of her son, ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied.

"I want to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to work from such an early age [and] my beautiful love, Benjamin, who has now given me my most important role of my life," she told the room. "Most importantly, my family, my friends and my love, thank you so much."

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez looked like the young A-listers they are when they arrived at the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party, arm in arm. The night was filled with nuzzling, schmoozing and being in love. It also served as the most high-profile appearance the two had made in their time as a couple.

Another Justin and his lady love also dazzled at the same bash. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chilled at the party, looking stunning in high-end fashion. The two may have broken up not long after the fete, but the photo remained a reminder of their often-speculated-about romance, before they got back together — and reportedly got engaged — later in 2011.

"True Blood" stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer looked like the grown-up version of Justin and Selena (both guys donned formal wear and both ladies wore blood red).

James Franco and Anne Hathaway may not have been romantically involved, but they were certainly trying their best to romance Oscar viewers as co-hosts. While Hathaway brought her high-energy theater-kid charm to the show, Franco opted for the type of charm we might expect from his "Freaks and Geeks" character Daniel Desario: low-key and a bit confused.

Who will be the biggest couples at the 2012 Oscars? Let us know in the comments!

Buying A House? Find A Buyer's Agent

If you're an average American, the purchase of a home dwarfs almost every other financial transaction you will ever engage in. You might pay $2500 for a family vacation to Florida or $27,000 for a new car, but at $221,800, the median home price is almost ten times that amount. Not only is it the biggest deal you'll ever make, but the odds are, you'll only engage in a transaction of this size two or three times in your life. That's not a lot of room for practice, and even the simplest mistake can make a huge impact on what you may end up spending.

Amazing Spider-Man Makes His Mark In New York

MTV News joins Spidey supporters to spread the friendly neighborhood web-slinger's insignia all across Manhattan.

NEW YORK — Spider-Man needs support. Sure, he's better off than most: Spinning webs and climbing walls does have its perks. But a strong superhero is nothing without a strong base of supporters championing his every move — something that isn't exactly easy for Spidey to accomplish with the Daily Bugle painting him as a menace on every other front page.

Perhaps MTV News can show the hero in a different light. Last Friday, we were invited to join a small group of passionate supporters to spread the mark of Spider-Man all across New York City. Our mission: to travel to predetermined locations throughout Manhattan to tag specific walls with the Amazing Spider-Man's famous insignia. "That's kind of odd," you might be saying to yourself. But there was nothing odd about it to Abigail Flynn, one of the carefully selected Spidey supporters out in full force on behalf of the amazing web-slinger.

"We're supporting Spider-Man," Flynn told MTV News of the campaign. "We're putting up the mark of the Spider-Man around the city to spread awareness and spread his message."

Fellow web-head Walter Sojda added, "He's fighting for the little guy. We have to show that in New York, we care about Spider-Man. We're supporting him here."

New York isn't the only place Spider-Man has recently found support. All last week, the superhero's message was spread throughout five other American cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearly, the hero's national awareness is on the rise — good timing, no doubt, considering he has a movie on the way!

Spreading the mark of Spider-Man isn't the only thing that has our spider senses tingling here at MTV News. Early last week, MTV Splash Page received a mysterious backpack in the mail, with no explanation as to its origin other than a haphazardly attached piece of duct tape reading "Property of Peter Parker." Spidey's supporters were tight-lipped when asked about Parker's identity, so the connection between the two remains unclear for now.

Here's something that is clear: Despite what the Bugle says, there's a whole lot of love out there for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — and Manhattan has the mark to prove it.

Are you following the mark of Spider-Man? Let us know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter at @roundhoward!
